Make it easy What's New on Netflix in August 2021

We don’t really have action movie stars these days—not like we did in the ‘80s and ‘90s, anyway. Who hath begat the likes of Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sly Stallone? No one comes to mind other than lower-tier (and certainly lower budget-commanding) actors the likes of Jason Statham and, somehow, Liam Neeson, and Netflix seems eager to add another to their ranks in Jason Mamoa with the release of Sweet Girl (Aug.23).

Speaking of Neeson, the film seems to be pretty much in the Taken mold, albeit subbing in evil pharmaceutical companies for evil human traffickers. Mamoa plays a husband and father whose life begins to unravel after his wife dies due to the unscrupulous actions of a large drug company. He grows determined to seek revenge, and is forced to get violent when his daughter’s life is threatened. (He has a particular set of skills, you see.)

On the gentler side of the Netflix Films release schedule comes a pair of teen-friendly rom-coms: The Kissing Booth 3 (Aug. 11), the thrilling conclusion to the Booth Saga (maybe); and He’s All That (Aug. 27), an opposite gender remake of the ‘90s Rachel Leigh Cook semi-classic She’s All That. Plus, the streamer is throwing a coin to fans of The Witcher who can’t wait for the season two premiere—the anime-style animated series The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (Aug. 23) should help tide you over until the flagship series drops later this year.
